MyMicrobiome Standard 19.10 tests products for our scalp
For a Microbiome-friendly world!
Scalp has been an issue in the history of cosmetics for quite some time. An impaired scalp results often enough in dandruff and this has ever been an unpleasant sight and also a sign of poor hygiene for both men and women. Theories on how to get rid of these disgusting skin particles on shoulders and clothes were and still are numerous, but our microbiome-friendly seal promises success by aiming at a balanced scalp microbiome – as an imbalance is the main reason for dandruff.
For a healthy scalp!
Typical bacteria and fungi
A healthy scalp microbiome displays some typical bacteria and fungi.
The Propionibacterium acnes is an important indicator for a healthy scalp, whereas the bacterium Staphylococcus epidermidis usually goes along with increased dandruff (see Saxena et. al). Furthermore, Malassezia species are a key factor for an intact scalp. A well-balanced microbiome holds mainly M. restricta and M. globosa, an impaired scalp microbiome shows an increased appearance of a Malassezia species that is not yet clearly identified.
The bacteria in the scalp’s microbiome are responsible for the metabolization of amino acids, B vitamins, and biotins – important elements for hair growth. Basic prerequisite for a bacteria-friendly environment is the right relation of sebum, pH, moisture, and evaporation rate of the scalp.
Until today, fighting dandruff was limited to fighting excessive colonization by fungi. Today’s most recent studies, however, indicate that an intact scalp microbiome is mostly dependent on a balanced bacteria environment. Providing Microbiome-friendly environment should therefore be the goal of scalp treatments.
