Many women suffer from recurring bacterial vaginosis – an imbalance in the bacterial composition in favour of pathogenic bacteria in the vagina. Under unfavourable influences, the healthy vaginal flora can change and an increase in bacteria can occur, which can lead to undesirable symptoms.
In the last decades, the gut microbiome has entered the center of public interest. But although we may have overcome our shyness regarding gut and skin bacteria, there is still one body part that seems to be stigmatized: the vaginal microbiome.
